Wall type belongs in the RFQ — not on lift day

Most LED channel letter programs fail after the crate arrives, not before metal is cut. A beautiful shop drawing that ignores substrate — brick veneer vs CMU, wood studs vs steel, gypsum with no blocking, or a unitized glass curtain wall — forces field improvisation: wrong anchors, wandering baselines, raceways that cannot reach the driver closet, and landlord punch lists that delay soft opening. Installing LED channel letters is a substrate decision as much as an illumination decision.

Treat wall type as a line item next to face acrylic and Kelvin. The same wordmark on brick, drywall, and glass needs different stud counts, hardware grades, and feed strategies. Naming “outdoor mount” on a PO without photos of the backup wall is how change orders appear after the letters are already in foam.

1:1 installation templates and threaded-stud patterns

A fabrication-ready package should include a full-scale (1:1) installation template — paper or lightweight film — with letter outlines, stud center marks, and raceway or whip exits called out. Tape the template level on the finished elevation, transfer hole centers, then remove it before drilling. Skipping the template and “eyeballing” kerning from a phone photo is how franchise sets drift letter-to-letter across a rollout.

Threaded studs (螺杆) welded or bonded to letter backs, paired with spacers or standoffs matched to the specified stand-off depth, are the default for individual letter mounts. Raceway or wireway mounts consolidate feeders when the landlord bans penetrations through every stroke. Confirm early: flush mount, stand-off halo gap, raceway depth, and whether the template must show both face outline and structural hole map. Wrong stud count or spacing cannot be fixed with longer screws on site.

On multi-site programs, freeze template revision letters the same way you freeze artwork: one approved pattern per elevation type. If Site B swaps brick for ACM fascia, regenerate the hole map — do not stretch the old template. Hardware bags should list stud diameter, spacer length, and anchor type so the crew is not guessing from a partial packing list under a boom lift.

Brick, CMU, and masonry façades

Masonry wants anchors matched to the real wall — solid brick, brick veneer over studs, or CMU with grout-filled cells. Veneer without a solid bite behind it will not hold heavy stainless or deep aluminum returns on decorative anchors alone. Call out whether letters hit mortar joints or brick face; prefer locating structural fasteners in solid units when the AHJ or landlord allows pattern shifts of a few millimeters.

Outdoor installs need sealed penetrations, drip intent on raceways, and stainless or coated hardware that survives wet climates. Map the low-voltage path from letter cans to Class 2 drivers before you cut the first hole: chase location, weep planes, and whether the driver lives in a remote enclosure or a raceway cavity. A masonry elevation that looks ready for LED channel letters often still needs a structural note from the GC on wind load and attachment into the backup wall.

Historic brick and soft mortar need extra care: oversize holes, wrong hammer-drill modes, or chemical anchors used without substrate testing can spall faces that the landlord will not accept. When in doubt, mock a single letter attachment on a scrap bay or approved test location before committing the full logo length.

Wood framing, ACM fascia, and interior drywall

Wood stud walls and wood-backed ACM or aluminum composite fascia are common on strip centers and pad sites. Hit studs or add blocking; sheet goods alone will creep under letter weight and wind. For wood, use appropriate lag or through-bolts with backing plates when the elevation is thin. Coordinate paint or ACM panel seams so raceways and stud lines do not land on a joint that opens seasonally.

Interior gypsum (drywall) is the most underestimated substrate. Hollow cavity with no blocking will crush under repeated service or heavy returns. Specify plywood or metal blocking in the stud bay behind the logo zone before the drywall closes — or plan shallow letters, lighter alloys, and adhesive-plus-mechanical hybrids only where the landlord and fire rating allow. Keep Class 2 drivers accessible; burying them behind finished gypsum without a service panel is a maintenance failure waiting for the first dim stroke.

For wood and ACM, confirm whether the fascia is structural or a rain-screen skin over a cavity. Skin-only screws into ACM without reaching studs or a stiffener plate will work loose after seasonal expansion. Share a section cut when you have one — it saves a second site visit and a second template print.

Glass curtain walls and sensitive architectural skins

Glass curtain walls and polished architectural skins punish improvisation. You rarely drill the vision glass; you attach to mullions, spandrel panels, outriggers, or a landlord-approved carrier bar designed with the façade engineer. Penetrating a unitized system without shop drawings risks leaks, warranty voids, and rejected inspections. Backlit channel letters with controlled halo gaps often read cleaner on glass than dense front-lit cans that fight reflections.

Concealed feeds, remote drivers, and bracket finishes matched to mullion metal are the coordination items architects care about. Share curtain-wall shop drawings, mullion spacing, and any no-drill zones early so letter kerning and stud maps land on structure — not mid-lite. If the brief demands floating letters on glass with almost no visible hardware, that is an engineered mount, not a field invention on lift day.

Polished concrete, stone cladding, and metal rainscreens follow the same discipline: attach to engineered backup or approved inserts, seal every penetration, and keep the halo or stand-off even so the night read does not telegraph uneven gaps. Architects reject installs that “work electrically” but break the façade language they sold the client.

What to send so mounting is buildable

For a clean install package, send: elevation photos and wall type (brick, CMU, wood, drywall, ACM, glass curtain wall); preferred mount (flush, stand-off, raceway); letter height and overall length; indoor vs outdoor; destination voltage and listing market; landlord or AHJ limits on penetrations and stand-off depth; and any existing blocking or mullion drawings. Vector artwork still matters — but substrate and mount intent are what keep the 1:1 template honest.
